Day one of our week in Montepulciano. Not great weather-wise in the morning - showery and cool. Had a lazy morning - found the local laundrette (easier than the machine in the villa) and the supermarket. So there went the morning.
After lunch we went into the old town. Through the big gates and on up (up is the right word). We visited a couple of RC churches including Santa Maria delle Grazie - both quite beautiful. The weather gradually improved and we really enjoyed the old town and the spectacular views from the edges. Just amazing. Ended up for a Caffe Latte (I had a beer as I am too cool to drink breakfast drinks in the afternoon) in the famous Caffe Poliziano (
http://www.caffepoliziano.it/)- been there since 1868. Spectacular inside, and my study of Lonely Planet paid off as I recognised that someone was leaving the small (and only) balcony table, and we took it over. Amazing views. Back to the villa for another pasta and tomato sauce meal - always good, and the 3 Euro a bottle Italian red was excellent as well.
Tricia said in her diary:
Wet and cold this morning. Spent the morning washing, grocery shopping. Lunch at villa. The afternoon we spent walking old Montepulciano, Cathedral Santa Maria. Enjoyed lovely meal at villa.
