What's this all about then?

This is a diary of our trip to Italy and the UK in May/June 2012. Somewhere to put our activities and some pictures.
We don't want to forget anything!

Friday, 15 June 2012 - Laurel and Hardy pilgrimage

Our first full day in Cumbria.  Not an outdoorsy sort of day because of the weather which looked damp and grey and was forecast to get damper and greyer.  So we decided to do a trip to Ulverston, not far away, to see the Laurel and Hardy Museum.  Ulverston was Stan Laurel's birthplace.  Mike decided he would rather have the day in reading the newspaper and lounging around, so just the three of us ventured out.  The drive was nice, picturesque countryside, with some sea views.  Finding Ulverston, and a car park was easy, the museum was just a couple of hundred metres from where we parked.

Spent some time in the museum - very simple, but it was very interesting.  They had a small theatre showing continuous movies, and I caught one that I remembered as a kid.  It's one of their best "The Music Box" which won the Academy Award for Live Action Short Film (Comedy) in 1932.  The link below shows it if you are interested.

Laurel, Laurel, Hardy and Hardy
We watched a couple more and picked up some souvenirs and we were about to leave but the grey showers had now turned to heavy rain.  We waited for a while for it to lessen.  We then walked/ran around the corner into the town and found a great Cafe/Bakery/Restaurant - Gillam's Tearooms.  Had a nice lunch, out of the rain.  After lunch the rain had stopped so we had a good look around the shopping area - it was very interesting.  Eventually made our way back to the car and headed home.

Walking near Field Broughton
Later we went for a walk down to the church - and had to shelter in the porch while it rained again.  Still - another great day.

Tricia put this in the diary:
Went to Laurel and Hardy Museum in Ulverston.  Saw a couple of movies, very funny.  Went for a walk in the afternoon.
